EESHANI'S ARANGETRAM

The word ‘Arangetram’ is derived from the Tamil and Malayalam languages meaning ‘ascending the stage’ by a Bharatnatyam dancer on the completion of training. Subsequently, the dancer becomes eligible to teach the art form to other aspiring dancers. Accompanied by a singer, instrumentalists, and the Guru, the performer uses the stage as a sacred temple and dance as her devotion as she depicts legends from Hindu mythology and folk tales.

Bharatanatyam (Sanskrit: “Bharata’s dancing”) is the oldest classical dance tradition in India, the others being Kuchipudi, Kathak, Kathakali, Manipuri, Mohiniattam, Sattriya, and Odissi. Its techniques and terminology have been traced back to ancient treatises first compiled into the Natyashastra by the Sage Bharata between 200 BCE and 200 CE.

Bharatanatyam is characterized by precise and powerful footwork, sophisticated hand gestures, and expressive eye movements, demanding discipline and dedication. Bharatanatyam was originally performed exclusively by Devadasis or temple dancers and brought to the stage for public performance in the 1940s after India regained independence from the British colonial rule.
